Make Your Own PhotoMat
Did you ever wish you could share your photo album with friends and relatives too far away to visit? Here’s a creative new way to do just that—sort of. And, at pennies a mailing, you can send as many as you want. Select from your storehouse of photos the ones you want to share.
Take the negatives (or the original prints, if the negatives are no longer available) to your photo lab to have copies made. Have an 8 x 10 enlargement made of your favorite photo. While you’re at it, pick up an inexpensive 8 x 10 mat and a can of spray mounting cement. When your photos come back from processing, take that favorite 8 x 10 enlargement and set it aside. Then either cut or tear the remaining reprint images into small bits of photos. Include the family dog from one shot, the kids from another. Throw in a view of the new car and a scene from the school play. Dry-assemble the photo bits on the 8 x 10 mat. Either overlap them or leave spaces between them like laying ceramic tile and grout.
When everything looks about the way you’d like it, spread out a sheet of newspaper and spray the backs of the photo bits. Reassemble them on the mat, pressing down firmly to allow the cement to grip. Finally, slip in your 8 x 10 enlargement. The results? A beautifully matted photograph, ready to frame—or to ship off in the mail. And at a fraction of the cost of making a duplicate album.
